The second-seeded Tar Heels edged the top-seeded Terps 16-15 when center Edward Bynum made one out of two free foul throws with 3.5 seconds left in the game in the post-season tournament.
Bynum scored 14 points. Shantrell McNear scored 2.
Dajon Frazier led the Terps with 7 points followed by Shaman Wilkerson with 4; De’Mar Handshaw and Carlos Whitehead had 2 points each.
The loss was the first of the season for the Terps, and the Tarheels had two losses.
In the semifinals, the top-seeded and regular season champion Terps knocked off the fourth-seeded Wolverines, 11-7, with Wilkerson leading the way with 6 points. Frazier and Whitehead added 2 points and Handshaw added 1.
Tavion Council had 3 points for the Wolverines with Malyiah Barrett and Drelyn Ford adding 2 points each.
In the second game of the semifinals, the second-seeded Tar Heels beat the third-seeded Rams 13-7, with Bynum scoring a game-high 10 points and McNear adding three points.
Rickia Sykes led the Rams with 5 points, and Tawrence Wiggins added 2 points.
In the opening round of the tournament, the fourth-seeded Rams beat the sixth-seeded Spartans 10-5 to move to the semifinals matchup against the second-seeded Tar Heels.
Dale Vick had 6 points to lead the Rams with Lawrencia Wiggins adding 4 points. Myron Barrett and Kalesha Murphy had 2 points apiece for the Spartans, and Markeen Tyler had 1 point.
In the second, first-round game, the fourth-seeded Wolverines edged the fifth-seeded Blue Devils 15-14.
Drelyn Ford led the Wolverines with 9 points, followed by Naz Boone, Malyiah Barrett and Uyame Adoga with 2 points each.
Kobe Lawson had 7 points to lead the Blue Devils followed by Kamon Walton with 4 points, Kevin Wilson with 2 and Derick Bynum had 1.
