PORTSMOUTH—Brandon Privette’s 3-pointer with 27 seconds left gave Isle of Wight Academy a 45-42 win over Stonebridge during Thursday night’s quarterfinals in the Metro Conference Tournament at Portsmouth Christian.

Collin Bowden’s free-throw with 6.7 seconds remaining clinched the victory for the Chargers.

A desperate Stonebridge heave went awry as time expired.

Privette was held in check for more than two quarters; his 3-pointer with 4:10 left in the third quarter was his first field goal of the game.

But Privette’s clincher was one of a series of clutch shots hit by the senior guard. He hit another with 2:30 left in the game and one with 1:52 left, bringing the Chargers to within a point, 40-39, after they had trailed by as many as 7 points.

After two Stonebridge foul shots, junior Michael McGuire’s basket with 1:06 to go again pulled the Chargers to within a point, 42-41, setting the stage for Privette’s late-game heroics.

The Chargers, 20-7, will play Williamsburg Christian in a semifinal at 7:30 tonight, Feb. 25. Atlantic Shores plays the winner of the Portsmouth Christian/Hampton Christian quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Friday. The title game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
