RICHMOND—Southampton Academy girls ended their basketball season with a Monday night loss to Blessed Sacrament Huguenot in the first round of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament in Richmond.
The No. 7 ranked Lady Raiders fell 36-19 to No. 2 ranked Blessed Sacrament after going into the locker room at the half trailing 14-13.
“We couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean,” SA Coach Chris Pope said about the second half. “The girls wet cold. We had only two field goals in the second half.”
Pope noted the girls played a great game throughout, they just couldn’t get any shots after the first half.
The Lady Raiders finished the season 6-12 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
As far as the record goes, Pope said he was disappointed in the season, but thought the girls progressed as the season went on.
SA will lose seniors Catherine Glover, Shelby Dunn, Courtney Beltrami and Ginny Taylor, but should see the return next year from starters Barclay Gatten, a sophomore, and junior Rachel Holland.
The junior varsity Lady Raiders finished No. 2 in the VCC and were scheduled to play Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the conference tournament. Results were not available as of press time.
