Southampton girls, boys to host Region 1 Tournament Tuesday

Southampton boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will host the first games of the Region 1 Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The No. 1 ranked Lady Indians will play Bluestone at 6 p.m. followed by the No. 3 Indians taking on Prince Edward at 7:30 p.m.

Assuming the girls win, they will host again on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. They boys may host Thursday’s game if they win. If either team loses, their seasons will be over.

Other Southside District schools in the Region A Tournament for the girls are Brunswick, Greensville, Prince Edward and Bluestone. Also competing from the district for the boys will be Brunswick, Parkview and Prince Edward.

In related matters, Southampton Girls’ Coach Aronda Bell was named the district Coach of the Year for Division III. Lady Indian Senior Regina Artis was named Player of the Year and chosen for the First Team. Senior Ronnie Powell was chosen for the Second Team and freshman Talisha Jenkins received Honorable Mention.

For the boys, junior Nick Doyle was named Player of the Year and chosen for the First Team. Second Team choices included senior Josh Johnson and Jalen Ford. Sophomore Tony Hill received Honorable Mention.

The Lady Indians on Friday night lost 43-57 to Brunswick in the Southside District Tournament finals at Greensville High School. The Southampton boys also lost to Brunswick, 55-44, in the title game.
