ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Academy’s Chelsea Edwards scored her 1,000th high school career point during Saturday’s home Metro Conference game with Atlantic Shores.

The 5-foot-4 senior needed only 6 points to reach the milestone. She scored her 1000th point with a lay-up in the first quarter.

Edwards began playing varsity ball for IWA as a freshmen, when she scored 109 points, or 4.7 per game. During her sophomore year, she scored 284 points, or 11.8 per game. An ankle injury during her junior year resulted in Edwards missing more than half the season, when she scored 179 points, or 11 per game.

As a senior, she has scored 439 points, for an average of 20 per game.

The Lady Chargers defeated Atlantic Shores 32-23. Edwards scored 16 points and junior Ally VanCampen added 7 plus 14 rebounds.

The Lady Charges led 15-1 at the end of the first quarter and 25-9 at the half. Atlantic Shores outscored IWA 14-7 in the second half.

“We had a hard time scoring in the second half,” said Lady Charger Coach Chris Hooper. “It was the fourth game of the week,” Hooper said. “We still had a number of girls fighting the flu and one starter was playing with strep throat.”

In action from Friday, IWA defeated Alliance Christian 42-26 in another conference game. Edwards netted 20 points and VanCampen added 16 and10 rebounds.

The Lady Charges are 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference. They will travel to Hampton Christian for a 7 p.m. game tonight, Feb. 14, and Atlantic Shores for a 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, makeup game. Both are conference games.

Assuming IWA wins both, the team should be fourth, fifth or sixth seeded for the conference tournament, which opens Wednesday, Feb. 24.
