ISLE OF WIGHT—Assuming Isle of Wight Academy girls win their final four Metro Conference games, the Lady Chargers could be headed to the state tournament for the first time in five years.
“We’ve been ranked (No. 12),” said IWA Coach Chris Hooper. “If we can end up in fourth, fifth or sixth place in the conference, we could be invited to the state tournament.”
The girls will play at Alliance on Friday, Feb. 11, before hosting Atlantic Shores on Saturday, Feb. 12, and Hampton Christian on Monday, Feb. 14; all games begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Chargers, who are 10-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference, defeated Alliance and Hampton Christian once this season but have not played Atlantic Shores. Atlantic Shores is in seventh place in the conference.
The Metro Conference Tournament will be played Feb. 24-26 at Portsmouth Christian.
In action from Tuesday night, the Lady Chargers defeated First Baptist 60-35. Senior Chelsea Edwards scored a game-high 19 points. Junior Ally VanCampen scored 16 points and eighth-grader Gabriella Hooper added 10.
On Monday night, Isle of Wight Academy defeated Southampton Academy 42-36 in a non-conference game.
Edwards led with 14 points and 7 steals, and VanCampen scored 10 and made 14 rebounds.
The Lady Chargers led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter, 24-15 at the half and 30-25 going into the fourth quarter.
