URBANA—Southampton Academy girls limited Christchurch to 1 point in the third quarter of Thursday night’s game to seal a 36-24 Virginia Commonwealth Conference win.

“The girls played much better and just shot the ball well for the first time in a while,” said Lady Raiders’ Coach Chris Pope.

SA improved to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

The Lady Raiders led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter and 21-15 at the half. The girls stretched their lead to 35-16 at the end of the third quarter.

“In the second half we came out strong, and they got control of the game,” Pope said. “Then we got a lot of our girls in that hadn’t played.”

Senior Catherine Glover scored 15 to lead the Lady Raiders; junior teammate Rachel Holland added 8. Senior Ginny Taylor led with 8 rebounds.

In other action, Glover scored 18 points during the Lady Raiders’ 42-30 Tuesday loss to Fuqua in a conference game.

“It was a one-point game at halftime,” Pope said. “We kind of let the game get away from us in the third quarter, but we pressed back on them and pulled within 3. With 2½ minutes to go, we kind of fell apart.”

Taylor led in rebounds with 8.

In junior varsity action, the Lady Raiders defeated Fuqua, improving their conference record to 5-2.

Southampton Academy will play three conference games next week, including a 6 p.m. match at Blessed Sacrament on Monday, Jan. 24. Wednesday, Jan. 26, and Friday, Jan. 28, the Lady Raiders will play Fuqua and Amelia, respectively, at home. Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
