Chargers undefeated in district

ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Academy took down Portsmouth Christian 58-41 Friday night in a Metro Conference win.

The Chargers improved their record to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the district.

Coach Benjamin Vaughn noted that his Chargers got off to a slow start. After the score was tied 5-all, the Patriots had an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Charger Collin Bowden connected on a 3-point shot to give IWA a 15-13 lead. Josh Thomas scored at the buzzer to put the Chargers ahead for the half at 26-22.

In the third quarter, IWA took control of the game. Nathan Sivertson scored back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 38-33. The Chargers pumped in 18 points for the quarter to give IWA a comfortable 44-33 lead.

Patriots Coach Bryan Dyke was pleased with his team limiting Chargers’ leading scorer, Brandon Privette, from too many points for three quarters.

They had a blocking three on Privette, Vaughn said.

But in the fourth quarter, Privette connected on two, 3-pointers.

On defense for the fourth quarter, the Chargers held the Patriots scoring to 8.

Privette led the Chargers in scoring with 16 points followed by Sivertson with 11.

Portsmouth Christian’s Rayshard Brown led all scorers with 23.

Portsmouth Christian fell to 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the district.

IWA plays at Stonebridge Tuesday, Jan. 18. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity match.
