Tidewater Academy topples undefeated Fuqua 64-40

WAKEFIELD—Tidewater Academy’s Martin Hellyer led with 20 points, helping the Warriors beat undefeated Fuqua School 64-40 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference game Friday.

The Warriors improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Falcons dropped to 3-1 overall and 2-1.

The game started out neck-in-neck throughout with multiple lead changes and ended with the Warriors ahead 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors then went on a 17-0 run to start the second quarter. An over-the-backboard buzzer beater at the end of the period by Tidewater’s Lamont Moore capped a 23-5 second-quarter scoring run by the Warriors that extended their halftime lead to 37-16.

The Warriors then outscored the Falcons 16-10 in the third quarter and 14-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors shot 64 percent from the charity stripe while the Falcons shot 44 percent. The Warriors had 6 points off the bench while the Falcons made eight.

Moore scored 17 points and made 12 rebounds. Teammate Mike Greene finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Ferley Yerby made 8 assists.

Levon Harper led the Falcons with 17 points. Carter Cunningham and Brian Haskins each finished with 8 points.
