Southampton Academy's Rashodd Maxey lays up for a basket against Banner Christian on Wednesday night. Maxey scored a team-high 12 points during the 85-57 loss.

COURTLAND—Banner Christian School’s 13, three-pointers helped lift the Bearcats to an 85-57 victory over Southampton Academy during the title game for the Raider Christmas Classic Tournament.

Southampton Academy finished second in the tournament and fell to 2-4 on the season.

“We never quit, and that is one thing about this team — they never quit,” Raider Coach David Gibbs said.

The Raiders started off strong with Blake Drewry getting the first points on the board, and he continued to score an additional 6 points.

Raider Rashodd Maxey led the team with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Teammate Garrett Smith added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Storm Gray made 10 rebounds.

Gibbs said defensively, Austin Foster did a great job at guarding their point guard.

“He (the BCS point guard) was quick.” Gibbs said.

The leading scorer for Banner Christian was Tyler Piper, who made five, 3-pointers.

The Raiders gave up 53 points in the first half while scoring 29.

Overall, Gibbs said he was happy with the game.

“We missed shots we had been making. The actual on-ball pressure was a lot better,” he said. “Every game I feel like we are improving. I’m learning more about my players — what they’re capable of. There will be tough losses this year, but we will keep working.”

The Raiders will travel to Brunswick Academy for a Friday, Jan. 7, game.
