Chowan loses 75-72 in final seconds

MURFREESBORO, N.C.—Michael Dunkin’s 3-pointer with two seconds to play lifted Saint Andrews over Chowan University 75-72 in non-conference basketball action Saturday.

Chowan gained its first lead of the game with 8:30 left in the second period when Travis Williams completed a 3-point play for a 60-57 lead. The two teams exchanged buckets over the final minutes of the game and with eight seconds to play in the game, Deandre Tyree hit 1-2 from the foul line to give the Hawks a 73-72 lead.

Chowan forced a turnover on the Knights’ next possession and got the ball back with five seconds to play in the game. The Knights got the ball back on an intercepted inbounds pass, and Dunkins made good on an open 3-pointer to get the 75-73 lead and eventual win.

The Hawks put two players in double figures led by Charles Rhodes, who had a game-high 21 points. Rhodes was 8-12 from the floor and hit 3-4 from 3-point land. He also had 3 assists and 3 steals.

Mark Brown came off the bench to add 15 points while Deandre Tyree had 13 rebounds and seven points. For the game the Hawks shot 47 percent from the floor and had 42 rebounds.

The Knights were led by Marvin Jackson, who put in 15 points while four other teammates each added 10 points. The Knights shot 28-66 from the field for 42 percent and had 36 team rebounds.

The Hawks will take off for the Christmas break and return to the court on Friday, Dec. 30, with a road trip to The Citadel. They will return home to the Helms Center on Thursday, Jan. 6, to host Johnson C. Smith in a CIAA cross over game.
