COURTLAND—Southampton Academy’s David Bogese rushed for 116 yards Friday night, leading the Raiders to an 18-3 win over Brunswick Academy.

Now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference, Southampton Academy exploded for 150 yards total offense in the second half, with Bogese rushing for 82 yards.

For the entire game, the Raiders accumulated 266 yards in offense compared to the Viking’s 130.

For the Raiders, John Hinkle had 67 yards on 14 carries and Wesley Barnes went 4-for-5 while passing for 84 yards.

Corey Clarke rushed for 43 yards for the Vikings.

“Offensively we were so-so,” said Raider Coach Dale Marks, “We had some really big plays called back because of penalties, that kind of hurt us.”

Barnes got the Raiders rolling with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Rashodd Maxey with 6 minutes left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt by Maxey failed.

With 4:45 left in the second quarter, Storm Gray sacked Viking’s quarterback Dylan Allen for a 3-yard loss, which forced Brunswick to punt. On the opening play of the drive, Barnes hit Maxey for a 23-yard pass. With 3:27 left in the half, Hinkle broke to the outside for an 18-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed.

With 1:02 left in the half, Maxey intercepted a pass from Allen that was intended for Tyler Parrish. The half ended with the Raiders leading the Vikings 12-3.

With 7:18 left in the fourth quarter, Barnes scrambled out of the pocket and launched a pass down field that found the anxious hands of Carson Camp, who continued to run down field for a 47-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 18-3.

“I thought the defense played a really good ball game,” said Marks, “Had some guys step in, did a good job. I am really proud of the defense because they (Brunswick) are a team that likes to grind it out, and with the exception of that first drive, we did a pretty good job of stopping them.”

The Raiders will host Tidewater Academy 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8.
