This year the Town of Ivor plans to again celebrate the Fourth of July, despite the turmoil caused by COVID-19.

“Things are getting better and we will adhere to all of the guidelines,” said Mayor Tara Kea. “The town council feels that if this is done, people will be safe.”

The upcoming celebration will be only the second to be hosted by the town in more than 20 years.

“We had such a big crowd last year and everyone had such a good time, we just couldn’t let them down,” she added with a smile.

Although some of the events held last year will not return for various reasons, Kea promised the day will be just as enjoyable.

“First and foremost,” the mayor said, “we are dedicating the day to our veterans. In doing so, we will have a display showing the name of every fallen military man and woman from the counties of Southampton, Sussex, Surry and Isle of Wight that we can find information on.”

Included of course will be the name of local Marine Sgt. Jayton Patterson of Sedley, who lost his life in Iraq 15 years ago.

“We want the families of these veterans to know that they are still in our thoughts and prayers,” said Kea. “My personal thought is that there’s never been a time in my life when I’ve been more grateful, or keenly aware of the freedoms we enjoy today because of these veterans and I firmly believe their sacrifices should be honored.”

Other attractions, all of which will take place in and around the H. Massey Joyner Ball field, will include several baseball games and a cornhole tournament. Then, there will be a Southampton County K-9 Unit demonstration, as well as demonstrations from the Ivor Volunteer Fire Department and the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Two bands, County Seat and Silverstreet, have committed so far, but Kea said she expects more musicians.

“It’s still early, so we could have even more events sign on,” she added.

For the younger crowd there will be dozens of events, including a petting zoo and a magic show with balloon twisting and juggling acts.

Then for the antique vehicle enthusiast, there will be a display of cars and tractors.

Kea noted that vendors will be everywhere and reminds crafters that there is no charge for a booth. She said space is still available, just call the office at 859-6397 to register.

As for food, the concession stand selling hot dogs and beverages will be open until 5 p.m. when a chicken and barbecue dinner catered by Captain Bob will be served on a take-out basis. During the day popcorn and sno-cones will be served free by the Ivor Baptist Church.

Kea said the celebration will start at 2 p.m. and continue until the fireworks display at 9 p.m. All events will be held near the ball field because there is more shade in that area.

Streets around the municipal building will be closed off, but there will be plenty of parking. Signs will designate parking areas, while volunteers will direct parking.
