A Southampton County school bus and truck collided today at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Route 58 westbound near Medicine Springs Road. The driver of the truck that ran into the back of the bus is being airlifted to a hospital, according to Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office. He added that five students are being taken in the same ambulance to a hospital as well.

The officer later stated, “In addition to the children transported, the bus driver and truck passenger were also transported by ambulance to Southampton Memorial. Two students were transported to the hospital by their parents.”

A receptionist at the Southampton County Public School Office said that Supt. Dr. Gwendolyn Shannon was on her way to the site. She later sent a reply, which is also found on this website.

Shannon also sent a message to the paper at 7:30 p.m. that “Our bus driver and all students, with the exception of one, have been released from the hospital. That one student is expected to be released shortly.

We are very fortunate.”

More details will be published as they become available.
