Donald King rushed for 171 yards and scored a touchdown as Isle of Wight Academy passed a major test, defeating Richmond Christian 22-14 here on Friday.
The Chargers rushed for 217 yards as a team, whereas Richmond only managed 103 yards. Starting Warriors’ running back Trevor Laury went out with a second-quarter injury, but amassed 80 yards on 15 carries in that time frame. IWA defeated Richmond Christian 41-8 last season.
IWA’s Jerry Dashiell led Chargers’ defense with 10 tackles; Zach Hinson and Colton Heard each had nine as IWA held Richmond Christian scoreless for the last 2-1/2 quarters.
Early on, the Chargers were their own worst enemy. A wayward punt snap gave Richmond Christian the ball on the IWA 49-yard line in the first quarter. Four plays later, a seemingly harmless pass by the Warriors’ T. Stephen Swiney floated into the hands of Miles Moore, who weaved through several Chargers and ran it in for the touchdown as Richmond took a 6-0 lead.
A long return by K.J. Jackson on the ensuing kickoff gave IWA the ball on the Warriors’ 21-yard line. Four plays later, Donald King ran it in from 14 yards away to tie the game at 6.
Richmond’s next possession was a 13-play, 65-yard affair capped by a 29-yard run by Laury to give the Warriors a 14-6 lead.
IWA tied the game on its first drive of the second half. Baines had the key play of a nine-play, 88-yard drive, a 13-yard run on second down. He called his own number again, finishing the IWA offensive with a 16-yard run.
He then hit Hinson with the conversion pass to make it 14-14.
The Warriors’ next drive petered out at their own 23-yard line, which set the stage for their first punt of the night. The kick traveled only 12 yards, giving IWA the ball at the Richmond 35. Six plays later, IWA’s Baines plunged in from a yard away. King’s conversion run made it 22-14.
