Following a brief postponement, the Virginia Department of Transportation will close Proctor’s Bridge Road (Route 616) for one week for culvert repairs over Hickaneck Swamp.

Traffic will be detoured in both directions beginning Monday, July 27, and continue through Friday, Aug. 7.

The maintenance project was originally scheduled for July 13, but was rescheduled because the necessary materials did not arrive in time.

To steer clear of the bridge, turn right on Warrique Road (Route 617) and travel approximately 2.25 miles to Crumpler Road (Route 618). Turn right and drive approximately 3.6 miles back to Proctor’s Bridge.

Tractor trailers should take a different detour route by turning right onto General Mahone Boulevard. Drive approximately 2 miles and turn right on Crumpler Road to return to Proctor’s Bridge Road.

Similar repair work was completed on Old Place Road (Route 567), and the roadway has been reopened. Crews were forced to temporarily repair a large sinkhole that developed from heavy rains which pounded the area in April, but had closed the roadway for more permanent repairs last month.
