Alvin Wood of Newport News has been formally charged with taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship and also sexual battery.

The arrest stems from a complaint made on Jan. 8 by a female student. She said that Wood, 47, had touched her improperly that day. The SRO was immediately suspended and relieved of his duties at the school. Five days later, the deputy gave his resignation.

An administrative and criminal investigation was then started, which included consulting with a Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, and the arrest warrants were made.

Wood was arrested today, Feb. 4, and was remanded to Western Tidewater Regional Jail with no bond.

“All law enforcement officers are expected and demanded to subscribe to the highest standards of ethics and the law,” Sheriff Mark Marshall said. “While I am disappointed by the actions of former deputy Wood, our office and those who work here will continue to reaffirm our commitment to the highest code of conduct at all times.”
