ISLE OF WIGHT—After a minute of game time elapsing, the outcome was never in doubt as the Isle of Wight Academy Lady Chargers cruised to a 65-36 victory against Broadwater Academy on Wednesday night.
Junior Gabriella Hooper led the way for the Lady Chargers with 26 points, hitting 3 of 5 from the free-throw stripe and also knocking down one from behind the 3-point arch. Juniors Brooke Olsavicky and Nani Castillo also added 10 points in the winning effort.
Head Coach Chris Hooper said this was one of the cleanest games they had played all season, with both the defense and offense operating efficiently.
During the first half, the Lady Chargers held the Lady Vikings to under 10 points in each quarter, allowing only 6 in the first and 8 in the second, while scoring 22 points in each quarter.
The minutes in the second half mostly came from the bench, and after the 6-minute mark in the fourth quarter, all of the minutes came from the bench. Broadwater Academy won the third quarter 12-11, and the fourth quarter was a 10-10 stalemate.
“I thought it was one of our better performances so far,” Hooper said.
“Especially in the first half where we had minimal turnovers. Defensively, fouls were minimal. That helped us play clean and kept them off the free throw line.”
Hooper said he got good production from his bench, specifically sisters Nani and Lexi Castillo, who are both junior guards.
“They really looked for their shots tonight,” he said. “Nani had 10 and Lexi had 7. They did an excellent job.”
The Lady Chargers improved to 5-3 on the season. They next face Norfolk Academy today on the road.
