Isle of Wight drops two in Life of Breath Tournament

WAKEFIELD—Isle of Wight Academy bowed to a superior Fredericksburg Christian squad, 76-29, Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Life and Breath Tournament at Wakefield School.

The Eagles got a game-high 21 points from senior Chris Cheatham in notching their first win of the season against 2 losses. Isle of Wight is now 0-3 on the year. Fredericksburg Christian wasted little time in pouncing on the Chargers, dashing out to a 25-11 first-quarter lead, one they never relinquished. The Eagles out-rebounded IWA 37-20, including a 19-5 edge on their offensive end, and made more than half (54 percent) of their field goals, including 10-for-22 from three-point range. Isle of Wight continued its scoring slump, shooting 34 percent from the field.

Isle of Wight falls 49-36

Isle of Wight Academy fell victim to a first-half scoring drought, losing to Faith Christian (Roanoke) 49-36 in the teams’ second-day games in the Life and Breath Showcase at Wakefield School.

Faith Christian got 16 points, including 4 from three-point range, from Nicholas Alterio to improve their season record to 3-3. Isle of Wight (0-4) was led by sophomore Bryce Casey with 11 points. Casey’s field goal with 40 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Chargers a lead, 9-6, but it turned out to be their last of the game.

The Warriors ran off the next 12 points into the second period to make it 18-9 and never looked back. Faith Christian claimed a rebounding advantage, 40-34, thanks to a 15-board effort by their center, 7-foot-tall Brendan Newton. Casey was the Chargers’ leading rebounder with 13.
