Speight throws one-hitter

COURTLAND—Southampton Academy’s Chelsea Speight gave up one hit and struck out two in the Lady Raiders’ 16-0 win over Richmond Christian in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament on Tuesday.

“We played a great game today, and we needed to come out strong,” said SA Coach Jeb Bradshaw. “This win was a total team effort, and I’m very proud of the girls.”

Offensively, the team had 22 hits for a combined .759 batting average.

Speight went 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Seniors Skylar Goodman and Rachel Holland both went 3-for-3. Goodman had two RBIs.

Seniors Beth Waller went 3-for-4 and Brigitte Bradshaw, 2-for-3. Each had three RBIs.

Juniors Whitley Smith and Kate Wachsmann and eighth-grade shortstop Ashten Hinkle were all 2-for-3 with one RBI each.

Sophomore Peyton Pittman went 1-for-3. Sophomore Katelyn Newsome had three stolen bases and classmate Morgan Pope had one.

The No. 3 seed Lady Raiders will take on No. 2 seed Brunswick Academy at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Tidewater Academy.
