COURTLAND—Rachel Holland’s 22 points led Southampton Academy to a 45-33 win over Fuqua School in the first round of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders will face Tidewater Academy in the semifinals at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Richard Bland College in Petersburg.

Holland scored four, three-pointers and went six-for-eight from the foul line. Teammate Barclay Gatten scored eight points.

The Lady Raiders outscored Fuqua 15-4 in the first quarter, but let the Lady Falcons take a 31-30 lead in the third quarter.

The Lady Raiders clamped down on defense in the fourth quarter, allowing Fuqua to score two points and securing the 12-point victory.

Coach Chris Pope said the team looks forward to playing Tidewater.

Tidewater swept SA in the teams’ two meetings this season. Pope said the Lady Raiders would have to be consistent on defense, but shoot better in the rematch to win.
