Southampton loses 7-0 to Poquoson

POQUOSON—Southampton High School’s football season ended after a 7-0 loss to host Poquoson in a first-round playoff game on Friday night.

Bull Islander running back William Emeny scored on a 12-yard run with 4:27 left in the game. Brandon Crowley’s kick was good.

It was the second time No. 5 seeded Southampton lost to No. 4 Poquoson this year. During the season opener, the Indians fell 32-15 to the Bull Islanders.

Southampton finished the season 6-5 and Poquoson improved to 8-3.

Southampton had 260 offensive yards to Poquoson’s 211.

Leading rusher for the Indians was Saiquan Mason with 133 yards on 22 carries followed by Jamar Bell with 51 yards on 11 carries.

Leading rusher for Poquoson was Emeny with 82 yards on 14 carries. Dylan Hill added 77 yards on 11 carries.

Southampton quarterback Mason Wright went 4-for-8 in passing for 25 yards. Poquoson’s Chase Pinder completed one out of five passes for 33 yards.

Highlights included a play be Pinder, who handed the ball to Hill. Hill then threw a 36-yard interception to Southampton’s De’Von Peterson with 2:25 left in the first half.

Another highlight occurred when Southampton drove the ball to the 12-yard line with 6:26 left in the third quarter. The Bull Islanders stopped the Indians on the five-yard line.

With 9:31 left in the game, freshman kicker Russell Ballance missed a 34-yard field goal.

Poquoson started off a drive on its 20 after the missed field goal and gained 48 yards before Emeny fumbled. Bell recovered the fumble.
