COURTLAND—Southampton High School’s volleyball team on Thursday completed a perfect regular season and took the Southside District title after defeating visiting Prince Edward 3-0.

The Lady Indians will put their 15-0 season record on the line when they begin the district tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at home against a yet-to-be-named teamed. Southampton is ranked 17th among state AA schools.

Thursday also was senior night, the last regular season match for six players.

“They all started and played the first set,” said Coach Chad Brock. “This is a special group because I started coaching five years ago, their eighth-grade year, as their JV coach. To watch them all grow and develop as young ladies, scholars, leaders and athletes has been a great experience.

Southampton won 25-16, 25-15, 25-22

Leaders were Marisa Cabell with 15 kills and Candace Earls with 16 assists.

“We played very smooth tonight,” Brock said. “The first two sets everyone was in sync and things just fell into place. During the third, we lost focus a little. I don’t know if the excitement of the occasion got to them or something else. I called a timeout, and they finished strong. I can’t wait to see how the season ends up”

Southampton was 8-0 in the district, while Prince Edward fell to 16-4 and 6-2 in the district.
