ISLE OF WIGHT—The Isle of Wight Academy middle school volleyball team added to its already impressive record over the last three years by finishing this season 14-0 and winning the Metro Conference tournament Saturday.
IWA beat Alliance Christian 2-0 in the semifinals before sweeping Portsmouth Christian in the finals 25-6 and 25-23.
The Lady Chargers racked up 33 wins and two losses in the last three seasons, said Coach Lee Perry.
“It is the girls,” Perry said. “I’ve got the most fantastic girls. They work better together than any group I’ve ever had.”
The team won all but one set in its 14 matches this year. That loss came to Baptist Christian School in Suffolk.
“That’s probably the best team we played all year,” Perry said.
He said he admired the spirit of his team, which could always storm back despite being down in a game.
“Whenever these girls got behind they came back like a steam engine,” Perry said. “I’ve never coached a group of young ladies that never got down when they got behind. It motivated them.”
Team members include eighth-graders Hunter Baylous, Katie Cross, Elizabeth Pittman, Molly Pittman and Myranda Waugh; seventh-graders Payton Baylous, Ashley Goff, Abigail Hickman, Alison Marshall, Kaitlyn Peterson, Ashley Petroski and Clair Williams; and sixth-grader Anna Wait.
