Southampton High falls to Poquoson

COURTLAND—Poquoson’s William Emeny scored three touchdowns to lead the Islanders to a 32-15 win over Southampton High School on Thursday night.

Teammate Dylan Hill scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, including an 84-yard kickoff return.

Playing its season opener, Southampton was led by Saiquan Mason, who carried the ball 24 times for 138 yards and one touchdown.

Both teams completed a total of one pass; Indians’ quarterback Mason Wright got the credit for the single completion in the game. Both teams threw one interception each.

The game opened with Southampton fumbling the ball during its second play, and Poquoson recovering it on the 35-yard line. Emeny scored on a 36-yard run with 10:33 left in the first quarter. Michael Roy missed the extra point on a block by Southampton’s Jerry Wright.

The Indians came back with Mason scoring on a 21-yard run with 3:25 left in the third quarter. Kicker Russell Ballance got the extra point, giving Southampton a 7-6 lead.

With 19 seconds left in the half, Emeny scored on a two-yard run to give the Islanders a 12-7 lead after he failed to get the two-point conversion on a run.

Hill opened the second half with his 84-yard touchdown on a kickoff return. Roy’s kick was good, giving the Islanders a 19-7 lead.

With 6:30 left in the third quarter, Hill scored on a 44-yard run. Southampton’s Jaron White blocked the kick.

Jerry Wright scored on a 4-yard touchdown for the Indians and followed with the two-point conversion, closing the gap to 25-15 with 8 seconds left in the quarter.

Emeny scored on a 10-yard run for the game’s final touchdown with 7:40 left in the game.

Southampton junior varsity team lost 27-12 to Poquoson on the road.
