SEDLEY—For a third year in a row, Newsoms 16U won the post-season tournament after splitting a doubleheader with Wakefield on Sunday.

Newsoms went into the double-elimination tournament undefeated and Wakefield had one loss to Newsoms from June 4. On Sunday, Newsoms lost 9-7 to Wakefield, but rebounded in the second game with a 6-3 win for the title.

“It has been a great season, and I have enjoyed every minute of it,” said Newsoms Coach Brent Edwards.

Edwards noted that Ashlee Buehner, Chelsea Pinner, Rebecca Lewis and Kaylee Harris have been on the team for the past three years.

“This is a great accomplishment for those girls as well as for Newsoms 16U,” Edwards said. “I am very proud to be their coach, and I could not have come this far without the help of my coaches and without this great bunch of ball players.”

In action from game one, Newsoms struggled with errors and strikeouts. Katelyn Newsome had two hits and Heather Bradshaw hit a double.

Wakefield pitcher Falon Williams gave up eight hits, walked one batter and struck out seven.

Buehner gave up two hits, walked four batters and struck out five for Newsoms.

In game two, Wakefield’s Cora Ellis started off with a hit and scored the first run.

Pinner started off with a bunt, followed by a hit from De Brickhouse. Buehner hit a triple and knocked in the first two runs for Newsoms. Newsome knocked in Buehner.

Brittany Johnson started off the second inning with a walk and stole home, giving Newsoms a three-run lead.

In the third inning, Shelby Felts got on base for Newsoms. Pinner got a hit and Brickhouse knocked in Felts. Buehner got a hit and knocked in Pinner, giving Newsoms a 6-1 lead.

Wakefield did not score until the seventh inning, when two batters were walked and both scored.

After the game, Lewis, Pinner, Buehner and Harris presented Edwards with a softball with their picture on it, signed by the whole team.
