SHS girls to play in regional tourney

Southampton’s Megan Revelle makes it to third base on a stand-up triple earlier this season. Revelle led the Lady Indians in triples this season with six.

COURTLAND—Southampton High School softball team will play Poquoson at 5 p.m. Monday, May 31, in the regional tournament.

Southampton is the No. 2 seed from the Southside District; Poquoson is No. 2 from Bay River District.

The following girls were recognized by the district:

FIRST TEAM

· Senior catcher Megan Revelle—A four-year starter, Revelle has led the team with a .564 batting average, three home runs, six triples and eight doubles. She had 24 RBIs. Behind the plate, she threw out competitors trying to advance 50 percent of the time.

· Senior shortstop Carla Matthews—Also a four-year starter, she was a brick wall at shortstop, making amazing play after amazing play. Matthews had over 41 assists and 19 putouts. She had a batting average of .333 with one home run, one triple, two doubles and 15 stolen bases.

· Senior outfielder Regina Artis—A three-year starter, her speed is what gets her noticed on the base path. Artis could hit from the left and right side of the plate. Her batting average was .362 with two home runs.

· Freshman outfielder Kaylee Edwards—She has also played shortstop and pitched. Edwards has a batting average of .357 with three strikeouts on the year. She had 17 RBIs, scored 11 runs, and a .962 fielding percentage.

SECOND TEAM

· Junior pitcher Ashlee Buehner—A first-year starter, she faced 407 batters and struck out 47 with an ERA of 1.33. Buehner also had a batting average of .397, 17 RBIs and 12 runs.

· Freshman third baseman Madison Cabell—She had more than 40 assists and 14 putouts. Cabell had a batting average of .362 with 16 RBIs and over 20 runs.
