Southampton goes for district title

COURTLAND—No. 2 Southampton High School on Thursday will travel to Powhatan to take on the top-ranked home team for the Southside District Tournament title.
SHS defeated Park View 6-1 on Tuesday in the semifinals to get into the 5 p.m. championship game.
Southampton was led by first team All-District pitcher Billy Nixon as he struck out seven in five innings to earn his eighth win of the season.
Offensively, Jake Pope was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Tonee Hill went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt, Tanner Winters went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Mason Wright 1-for-2 with a two-out RBI single and a run scored and Hayden Spalding 1-for-3 with a double to plate Pope in the first inning.
The Indians’pitching staff, which also included sophomore Dillon Hasty’s first appearance in a varsity game and Josh Riddick, held the Dragons to three hits and had nine strikeouts.
