ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Academy beat Portsmouth Christian 11-0 in a rule-shortened, five-inning game Thursday to move on to the Metropolitan Conference Championship at 4:30 p.m. today at home.

Pitcher Shelby Jurewicz pitched a one-hitter. She had eight strikeouts, gave up no runs and allowed no walks.

Jurewicz went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Eighth-grader Bailey Key, who leads the team with a .532 batting average, went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

SA Coach Chris Hooper said the team played well on both sides of the ball during the semi-final match. He said the Lady Chargers were forced to make adjustments on offense due to the number of pitchers they faced.

“Our team defensively did what we needed to do to win,” Hooper said. “We got hits when we needed them.”

IWA will be the No. 2 seed in the state tournament, which starts Tuesday, May 17. The Lady Chargers will host a first round game against Fuqua School.
