James Whitfield Thweatt, Sr., 90, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away April 16, 2011. “Tweet” was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Anna Davis Thweatt, and his brother, Warren L. Thweatt. He is survived by his foster sister, Maggie Lou Lewis, of Stony Creek; son James W. Thweatt, Jr. (Sheila) of Salem; daughter Sandra Thweatt Gouldin (Fred) of Richmond; six grandchildren, Jay Thweatt (Monica) of Cincinnati, Ohio; Brad Thweatt (Mary) of Richmond; Kristin Stone (Trevor) of Rockville, Maryland; Kemp Gouldin of Arlington; Meghan Gouldin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Davis Gouldin of Richmond; and five great grandchildren, the youngest being welcomed on April 17, 2011, the day after Tweet’s passing. After receiving his BS Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and commission as First Lieutenant in 1941, Tweet served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Two of those years were spent in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Tweet’s career in public education spanned 43 years as a teacher, principal, and superintendent of Lunenburg County Public Schools and Supervisor of Administrative Review in the Virginia Department of Education. He is a 32o Mason and member of ACCA Shrine Temple in Richmond. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, at Courtland United Methodist Church with interment following at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Karan and Mark Hodges, 26290 Tyler Court, Courtland, Virginia 23837. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the loving and caring staff of Lakewood Manor for the care provided to Tweet and “Noonie”. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Courtland United Methodist Church, 22416 Main Street, Courtland, Virginia 23827 or to the Lakewood Manor Employee Christmas Fund, 1700 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23238.
