SA netters lose tight match

POWHATAN—The Southampton Academy girls’ tennis team lost a 5-4 nail-biter to Blessed Sacrament Huguenot in Powhatan Tuesday.
Barclay Gatten won against Marie Mullins 8-0 in the first match. Barclay stepped up her play using a variety of slices, drop shots and lobs.
Jessica Porter defeated Heather Boys 8-0 in the second game. Ginny Taylor lost to Anna Ransone 1-8 in the third game.
In the fourth match, Courtney Beltrami lost to Olivia Fowkes 2-8 and Meagan Dail, the No. 5 seed, lost to Jamie Hall 2-8. Megan Drewry came back to defeat Alissa Doebler 8-6 in the sixth match.
Rebecca Lewis won an exhibition match 8-2.
In doubles play, Gatten/Porter defeated Mullins/Boys 8-0, which put the Raiders up 4-3 on the day.
Taylor/Beltrami started strong and gained a 3-0 lead.
They fell short, losing 6-8.
Dail/Drewry rallied to 5-all before losing 5-8.
The Raiders are 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.
