SHS boys’ netters overtake Franklin

COURTLAND—For its first meeting of the 2011 tennis season, the Southampton High School boys’ tennis team defeated Franklin 6-3 on Friday.

“We are reloading this year after losing four seniors from the last year team,” said Bronco Head Coach Frank Davis. “Only one player from last year returned this year in the person of Donqua’ Thomas who is playing in the number 1 spot.”

“Suiting up for the Broncos this season we have five players that are just beginning to learn the game but are showing signs of progress each day,” Davis added.

For the Broncos in singles matches No. 1 Thomas lost 4-8 to Deshon Rollins, No. 2 Parish Garza won 5-8 over Ezz Niles, No. 3 Micheal Lawyer dropped to Sam McDonald 6-8, No. 4 Shaun Derama lost to Ellis Cofield 4-8, No. 5 William Jackson went down to James Walker 1-8 and No. 6 Saquan Johnson won by forfeit.

In doubles, No. 1 Thomas and Garza won 8-5 over Rollins and Niles, No. 2 Lawyer and Derama defeated V. Jeffett and Deshawn Johnson 8-1 and the No. 3 match was a forfeit to the Indians.

The Broncos are 0-2 for the season.
