COURTLAND—Southampton High School girls defeated Nottoway 57-23 Wednesday night in a Southside District competition.

The Lady Indians improved its record to 10-3 overall and 9-1 in the district.

Leading the way for Southampton was Regina Artis with 17 points. Ronnie Powell added 16 points and Tenicia Joyner, 14 points. Powell went 100 percent from the free-throw line.

Nottoway was first on the board with a 2-pointer by Cati Snead, who led the Lady Cougars with 13 points. Artis was the first on the scoreboard for the Lady Indians with a 2-pointer to tie the score with 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The quarter ended with Southampton leading 6-3.

With 7:20 left in the half, Joyner hit a 2-point shot off a bounce pass from Artis, which began a 15-point run by the Lady Indians. The run would continue until the 4:20 mark when Nottoway’s Raven Jackson hit a 2-pointer; the score at the time was 21-5.

The half ended with Southampton leading 26-7.

Artis opened up the third quarter under heavy opposition by Nottoway; this began a smaller 6-point run. Snead ended the run with 5:15 left in the quarter; the score was then 32-11.

With 3:20 left in the quarter, Powell made a 3-pointer to cap off her 9-point with three back-to-back 2-point shots. The quarter ended with Southampton leading 50-15.

Southampton will travel to Parkview on Friday, Feb. 4, for another district competition; game time is 6 p.m. The Lady Indians will host Franklin on Saturday, Feb. 5, as part of the rescheduled four-game tournament.
