KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C.—Ben G. Sanderlin Jr. died Jan. 13, 2009, after an 11-year battle with cancer.
Retired from the RT French Co., Ben was preceded in death by his father, Ben Garrett Sanderlin Sr. of Old Trap, N.C., and his mother Lois Brinkley Sanderlin of Corapeake, N.C.
Mr. Sanderlin graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952.
Survivors include his wife and companion of 27 years, Evelyn Sanderlin; a son, Ben Garrett Sanderlin III and wife Terri of Windsor; a daughter, Cheryl Lynne Sanderlin of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Christy Mason and husband Brian of Chesapeake; two great- grandsons, Zachary and Trevor Mason of Chesapeake; two step-daughters, Karen Dodd and husband Curtis of Portsmouth and Kim Lauterbach and husband Bobby of Chesapeake; two step-granddaughters, Kelly Smith and husband Brian of Germany and Stephanie Blake (SB) of Chesapeake; and loyal friends, John and Ruby Gray of Portsmouth and Carter Blakely, Jim Wilson and Bobby and Dianne James, all of North Carolina.
He was a member of the Ambassador Club since 1972, serving in numerous offices from chaplain to president, previously honored as most valuable member.
He organized the first Ambassador Club fishing team.
He enjoyed fishing tournaments with the Pheasant Pluckers of Ocracoke and Nags Head and Twisted Tails of Hatteras.
A memorial service will be held at the Ambassador Club, Peninsula Avenue, Portsmouth, Sunday at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ambassador Club Scholarship Fund.
