NEWPORT NEWS—JoAnn B. Nixon, 77, died Dec. 16, 2008.
She resided in Newport News since 1955. She was born in Henderson, N.C., on Oct. 19, 1931, to the late Ruth Candice Moore and John W. Black.
She was the widow of William H. “Billy” Nixon and was preceded in death by twins, Baby boy and Baby girl Nixon.
Mrs. Nixon retired from the Newport News Public School System in 1987.
She was a member of Alpha Iota Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a member of First United Methodist Church, where she held positions of leadership as a Sunday school teacher, member of the church council, member of the Evangelism Committee, Nominations Committee, Staff Parish Committee and Lay Leader.
She very much enjoyed the fellowship and participation as a member of the Bithynia Sunday School class.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Leigh Nixon; son, Wm. Martin Nixon of Zuni; and grandson, Joseph William “Billy” Nixon of Sedley.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with interment following in Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
