COLUMN: Greetings from the 2025 General Assembly

This past week was hectic in Richmond, as it was the week before “Crossover,” which happened on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

“Crossover Week” means that all bills introduced in both the House and Senate must make their way through the committee process in the chamber of origin by the end of this week.  Currently, 561 Senate bills and 1169 House bills are awaiting final action in their respective chambers.

“Crossover” is the process by which successful legislation “crosses over” from one chamber to the other.  “Crossover Day” in the Virginia General Assembly is the day in the legislative session when bills must pass by in their respective chambers in order to be considered in the other chamber. In other words, a bill must pass in the House of Delegates before it can even be considered in the Senate, and vice versa.

I am proud that I have many of my bills that will be headed to the House to start that process.  I am anticipating continued bipartisan support for these bills.

Additionally, the budget will report out from the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee on Sunday afternoon.  I updated you last week on my efforts to secure needed funding for specific projects needed across the 17th Senate District.  Next week, I will have more to share on the outcome of the budget process once I read and review the final budget.  It will be voted on next Thursday.

Seeing smiling faces from the 17th Senate District makes the long days in Richmond go by faster.  If you would like to visit during the session, I welcome you to reach out.  Tune in next week for another update from “The Jordan Journal.”
