Library set for summer reading, donation drive
Registration for the 2023 summer reading program “All Together Now” is scheduled to begin the week of June 26 at Blackwater Regional Library.
A BRL news release noted that the library encourages families to participate in a variety of weekly programs scheduled to take place at each of the library’s locations; schedules are flexible to allow families to participate in events and activities of their choosing. Activities include, but are not limited to, the Mariners’ Museum, Virginia Living Museum, Chippokes Plantation State Park, magicians, STEAM and more.
“Librarians and teachers are aware that children often experience a phenomenon known as ‘summer slide’ when they are out of school and not practicing learned reading skills,” Assistant Library Director Bonnie Lauver said. “We encourage parents to help their children avoid the summer slide by participating in the library’s free, fun and educational summer reading program.”

As an added bonus, Blackwater Regional Library will host a “Christmas in July – Animal Shelter Donation Drive” June 26-Aug. 5 to collect basic needs for local animal shelters. Patrons donating to the cause may have up to $10 in overdue fines waived from their account. (This includes fines for overdue materials only; lost and/or damaged materials fees will not be waived.)
“Engagement with community partners is at the forefront of the library’s mission, but we are also pleased to offer this opportunity for patrons to clear, or minimize, account balances to break down barriers in accessing library services,” Lauver said. “Donating to animals in need, and reducing library fines, is a win-win for everyone.”
