The Hampton Roads Community Foundation recently announced their Walter Cecil Rawls Scholarship recipients for the 2020- 2021 school year. Among them is Franklin High School’s 2020 Valedictorian, Myroen Barrett Jr., the school’s first African-American male valedictorian.

Barrett, who is the only Franklin High student on the list, is attending Old Dominion University.

Along with being last school year’s valedictorian, he received several honors at the 2020 graduation. Barrett was an honor graduate, member of the National Honor Society and JROTC, and recipient of the Governor’s Seal for completing the requirements for an Advanced Studies diploma and successfully completing transferable college credits.

He also received the Career and Technical Education Seal, Seal for Excellence in Civics Education, and the Advanced Mathematics and Technology Seal.

“The entire team at Franklin High School is extremely proud of Myroen, our 2020 valedictorian,” said Franklin High School Principal Travis Felts. “Myroen is an outstanding student and has a great personality, work ethic, leadership skills, and people skills. There is no doubt that he is going to be successful in life and make Franklin proud. I look forward to hearing about all of his accomplishments.”

The fund awarded a total of $15,000 for the upcoming school year. This year, the Foundation stated that their board of directors approved more than $1,528,680 in scholarship awards to nearly 450 students.

“This year’s outstanding recipients have bright futures ahead of them,” said Leigh Davis, vice president for Donor Engagement.
