NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, N.C.

A man formerly from Southampton County who lives at an assisted living facility in Northampton County, North Carolina, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Health.

The man, who is in his 60s, was transported to a local hospital for an unrelated medical emergency, according to the press release.

The Western Tidewater Health District is working a contact investigation with the Northampton County Health Department. Those with contact exposures will be notified and advised of precautions they should take.

Will Drewery of the Western Tidewater Health Department stated by phone on Thursday that he did not know what hospital was treating the man. However, the fact he is originally from Southampton County is relevant, because some of his family and friends may live in Southampton County.

“If they are contacts, they will be notified,” Drewery said.

This case is a great example of the collaborative health effort that occurs when we have patients that cross state borders,” said Dr. Todd Wagner, director of the Western Tidewater Health District.
