The undefeated Southampton 10U softball All Stars won the Fourth of July tournament in Suffolk and 2010 Pony East Zone Championship in southern Chesapeake.

“Both tournaments were won because of teamwork” said Head Coach Cynthia Cobb. “The teams we played against in both tournaments have played together all season. Before the Suffolk toaurnament, we had two practices. For a team to come together and win a tournament with just two practices says a lot.”

The 14 girls represent six teams from the county. Members from Capron are Kelli Ferguson, Mason Pope, Allison Matthews and Alaina Schools; from Courtland are Bryona Knight and Katelin Belcher; from Ivor is Savannah Blum; from Newsoms are Brittany Cobb, Diamond Jones, Megan Vincent and Sarah Williams; from Sedley are Meaghan Tharrington and Hilary Newlon; and from Wakefield is Dacey Carwile.

At the tournament in Suffolk, the Southampton 10U All Stars went up against Smithfield for the first of three back-to-back games. Southampton won 13-1. Knight struck out five out of 12 batters, while Smithfield walked eight Southampton batters.

Knight also went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a home run. Pope went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Southampton then crushed the Orange Crush of Suffolk 18-1. Cobb and Jones went 2-for-4 at the plate for, while Pope went 2-for-3 and Ferguson went 2-for-2.

Vincent struck out five Suffolk batters.

Southampton then defeated Southern Chesapeake 11-4. Tharrington went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Pope went 2-for-3.

Vincent pitched three innings, striking out seven batters, with Ferguson coming in for the last two innings for the win, striking out six batters.

Southampton the next day defeated Smithfield 9-1; Southampton struck out 10 batters. Vincent came in for the win, striking out three batters. Pope went 2-3 at the plate.

The win put Southampton in the Championship game against Suffolk. Southampton defeated Suffolk 9-1 for the title.

Pope and Carwile both went 2-for-3 at the plate while Vincent struck out seven batters.

Two weeks later, Southampton traveled to southern Chesapeake for the 2010 Pony East Zone Championship. In the first game against Windsor, Southampton won 10-0. Cobb went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Vincent pitched four innings, striking out eight batters. Ferguson came in for the win, facing four batters and striking out one.

Little Creek Nationals the lost 12-5 to Southampton behind the pitching of Knight and Ferguson. Knight struck out nine batters and Ferguson two. Knight and Carwile went 3-for-4 at bat, while Tharrington was 2-for-2.

In the third game for the day, Southampton defeated Deep Creek 9-0.

Vincent won the game, striking out four batters, and going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The next day, Southampton defeated Greenbriar 11-3.

Knight earned the win, striking out 13 batters. Pope, Knight and Newlon each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Southampton followed with a 6-3 win over Smithfield for the championship. Vincent struck out six batters. Pope went 3-for-3, with a triple, double and single.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better all-around group,” Cobb said. “I also had great help from Jeffery Pope of Capron. He has been to All Stars, as well as myself, the last three years in some capacity. Ronnie Vincent also helped out a lot; he was my assistant coach at Newsoms.”
