NEWSOMS – Shirley Edge Williams, 84, passed away June 23, 2025 in her home, surrounded by family. She was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina to the late Grover and Mildred Edge. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Rev. Kenneth W. Williams, and her brother Charlie Edge.
Shirley will be remembered for her love for her family a
nd friends. Before her illness, she faithfully sent beautiful cards to others on birthdays and other special occasions. She was a long-time employee of Leggett (Belk) department store where she helped moms find the perfect outfits for their little ones. Shirley enjoyed bird watching, baking cakes for the Ruritan Club Fundraiser, and playing cards with friends.
Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Nancy Jenkins (Whitey) of Conway North Carolina, Kathie Isles of Littleton, North Carolina and Penny Baugham (Lynn) of Newsoms; a son, Wayne Williams (LeeAnn) of Courtland; a sister Faye Taylor of Wilson, North Carolina; a brother, Kenneth Edge (Kay) of Red Oak, North Carolina; special sisters-in-law, Peggy Edge of Courtland and Joann Williams of Emporia; and nieces and nephews.
“Granny” was a loving grandmother to Jamie Lynch (Courtney), Rob Jenkins (Donna), Abby Dalton (Jason), Carly Shanahan (Charlie), Kevin Drake, Cole Lucas (Ashley), Jessi-Kate Lucas and Rachel Sappenfield (Jimmy) and great-grandmother to Dru and Gracie Lynch, Meghan, Matt and Noah (Talie) Dalton, Dylan and Shep Shanahan, Kyle, Keegan and Elana Drake, London Scott and Ellie and Sam Sappenfield.
Shirley was lovingly cared for in her home by special caregivers, Ina “Miss O” Rawls and Robin Hudgins.
Special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for helping to make her last days comfortable. Nurses Mary Howard and Jonette Cleaton and Chaplain Richard James will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Services will be held on Sunday, June 29 at 3 p.m. in Newsoms Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors in the church fellowship hall following the burial.
