FRANKLIN – Marjorie Flythe Whitley loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025. She was born in Conway, North Carolina, to the late Jesse Little and Kate Johnson Flythe on Feb. 29, 1928. She was predeceased by her husbands, R.C. “Punk” Whitley and Shepherd Johnson. She was also predeceased by 10 siblings and a very special niece, Susan Flythe.

Marjorie is survived by a son, Carter Whitley (Fair) of Charlotte, North Carolina and two daughters, Katie Whitley Sloan (Gary Starr) of Chester, Virginia and Marge Whitley Whitley (George) of Nags Head, North Carolina. Marjorie is also survived by seven grandchildren, Carter and Cyrus Whitley, Joe, Will and Josh Sloan; and Sarah and Morgan Whitley and five great-granddaughters, Addison Kate Sawyer; Whitley and Lottie Sloan; and Isabel and Mary Sloan.

She was a graduate of Conway High School, attended Chowan College and received her associate’s degree from Paul D. Camp Community College. Her value of education was instilled in her children as an important expectation for their future.

Marjorie grew up on a farm in Conway, North Carolina. As a member of a large Christian farm family, she developed the values and beliefs that she would pass on to her children and future generations of her family. She was married to R.C. “Punk” Whitley for 50 years and they made their home in Franklin, where they raised their three children. Marjorie was a “stay at home mom” until 1966 when she began a career as an early childhood educator at Mrs. Clark’s Kindergarten in Hunterdale and at S.P. Morton Elementary School in Franklin. During her time as a homemaker, Marjorie was famous for her peanut butter fudge and lemon icebox pie. She also gave numerous perms and haircuts to her neighbors and her daughters’ friends on Saturday mornings.

Marjorie was a member of High Street United Methodist Church for 70 years where she held many leadership positions to include president of the United Methodist Women and president of the Friendship Circle. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star where she served in many leadership positions including Worthy Matron. Marjorie was a member of the Jerusalem Chapter of the UDC and donated many hours as a volunteer at Southampton Memorial Hospital. During her later years she served as president of the Residents’ Council at the Village at Woods Edge where she resided from 2008 until her passing. Her years at the Village brought her much joy and many friendships. Marjorie enjoyed aerobics at the YMCA, card games and dominoes with family (Old Maids) and friends, crafts at the Village and special times with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren above all else.

Her celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at High Street United Methodist Church, 31164 Camp Parkway, Courtland, VA 23837 and committal to follow at Southampton Memorial Park.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to High St. United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Franklin, VA 23851.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of The Village at Woods Edge for their compassion, kindness and loving care of their mother during the past few years.
