The old saying that it is hard to beat a team three times in one season recently proved true for the Franklin High School varsity boys soccer team.
After defeating Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 7-2 on the road on March 27 and 6-1 at home on May 2, the Broncos took on the Dragons again in the Region 1B Tournament semifinals on Tuesday, June 3, at Armory Field in Franklin.
At the half, the home team was down 2-0. The Broncos scored midway through the second half on a goal by sophomore Nikolas Swann.
With only seconds remaining in the game, Franklin launched an all-out attack on offense in an effort to tie the game, and sophomore Yoxan Raul Herrera-Soriano fired the Broncos’ last attempt from right in front of the goal, but his kick was stopped by the Dragons’ goalie.
Franklin ultimately lost 2-1.
Broncos Head Coach Juan Quiroz said after the game, “I am proud of the way the team played, and I truly believe that we are the better team. We had way more goal opportunities than the Dragons, but we just couldn’t score.”
The Broncos reached the regional semifinals after advancing past Cumberland High School in the quarterfinals on May 29.
Franklin finished the season with an overall record of 8-11.
