To belong to the National Honor Society (NHS) or the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is not merely a club membership based on fleeting popularity. It is a visible commitment to the four ideals, or pillars, of the organizations: Excellence in scholarship, service, leadership and character. For the younger set the extra quality is citizenship.

A Franklin City Public Schools (FCPS) news release noted that 17 students joined the NJHS and 21 joined the NHS during a ceremony in the Franklin High School (FHS) auditorium in April. These students’ induction was witnessed by family, friends and classmates.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Jy’Liyah Smallwood and the welcome given by Zion Jones (both current NHS representatives), the groups’ advisers called the impending new members to the stage to receive their certificates and pins that would mark them as new inductees.

Amy Wilkins guides area NJHS members, while Diane Dovell does the same for local NHS members. Each adviser led the new members to recite aloud the oath that binds them to their respective honor society and its principles.

The new NJHS inductees included the following: Antonio Baker, Rhonda Bell, Mackenzie Carter, James Chilcote, Madyanna Dillard, Davis Faith, Yhaz’zha-Nique Gilliam, Amiyah Johnson, Ty’yana Lee, E’Kiyah Mitchell, E’Ternity Mitchell, Zi’yonna Myrick, Jacob Otellio-Reyes, Zah’Riya Russell, Za’Kaiyah Saunders, Michael Williams and Zion Wilson.

The new NHS inductees included the following: Mariah Austin, Tihanna Barrett, Nathan Brayton, Kah’Lissah Burnham, Tiereney Eley, Madison Hatfield, Deja Hayes, Thomas Hughes, Ashaud Lee, Brayden Jackson, Carley Jackson, Tyaonna Mitchell, Willie Murphy, Te’Yanna Pearson, Daevion Person, Da’Kariya Perry, DeMaria Shearin, Samya Singh, Huy Van, Deniyah Vaughan and Sophia Wood.

After brief remarks by FHS Interim Principal Dr. Tonica White and FCPS Chief Academic Officer Krystal Thompkins, a reception awaited everyone in the high school cafeteria.
