COMO, North Carolina – Shera Dare “Sheri” Taylor Wheeler, 80, widow of John Kendall Wheeler passed away May 24, 2025 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard Kelly Taylor and Willie Simmons Taylor and her brother, H. Kelly Taylor Jr. Shera was born in Newport News and grew up in Como. Sh
e was a 1962 graduate of Murfreesboro High School and a 1966 graduate of East Carolina University. She was a proud North Carolina girl and former first lady of Como who loved catfish, oysters, okra, fried of course and a good chicken salad. Shera was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church and was a retired Rural Wellness Supervisor for Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (1974-2012) supervising six meal sites and home delivered meal programs serving hundreds if not thousands of older adults in Suffolk, Franklin and the counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton. She loved dogs and was a huge Washington Redskins fan, never caring too much for their new name.
Left to cherish her memory is her faithful and sweet girl dog, Charley, a niece, nephew, cousins and a host of friends, classmates and former co-workers who loved her dearly.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday May 30, 2025 at Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como, North Carolina with Pastor Bob Deacon officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Buckhorn Baptist Church or Como Volunteer Fire Department.
