Sergeant (USMC) Jayton D. Patterson Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 4411 members dedicated time on Friday, May 23, to honor deceased service members in advance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.
As History.com notes, “Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.”
A group of veterans and VFW Post 4411 Auxiliary members placed flags Friday at the graves of every veteran buried at Southampton Memorial Park Cemetery in Franklin.
VFW Post 4411 and its Auxiliary adopted the cemetery a few years ago to ensure U.S. flags are placed at every veteran’s grave site there for Memorial Day and Veterans Day every year.
In an email making fellow Post members aware of the flag placement event, VFW Post 4411 Comrade Susan Moore stated, “If you’re like me, you have several deceased family members that’re veterans, but you’re unable to ensure they’re remembered on Veterans Day and Memorial Day because of the distant location, so this is an opportunity to honor veterans of other families who are unable to personally place a flag at their grave site!”
