Virginia State Police (VSP) reported shortly before 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, that it was on scene in Isle of Wight County investigating a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 258 that had caused the roadway to be shut down for an extended amount of time.
A VSP news release stated that on Tuesday, May 20, at 11:51 p.m., state police responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries at 1033 Five Forks Road in the county of Isle of Wight.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the male driver of a 2000 GMC Sonoma was traveling southbound on Route 258 without his headlights on when a 2022 Ford Explorer, an on-duty Isle of Wight sheriff’s deputy, struck the GMC from behind, VSP officials stated in the release. Officials added that shortly after the crash, the driver of a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer, traveling northbound on Route 258, attempted to avoid the crashed vehicles and ran off the roadway into a ditch, overturning onto its side.
The release stated that all three drivers were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The tractor-trailer was loaded with 44,000 pounds of ham and will need to be unloaded,” VSP officials stated. “This has caused the major delay in road closure. The Virginia Department of Transportation is on scene and currently has detoured the area for traffic.”
The release noted that there was no further information to report as of 5:49 a.m. on Wednesday.
“Troopers are still investigating the crash,” VSP officials stated. “Once more information becomes available for release, an updated release will follow.”
