FRANKLIN – Gerald Mack Elks passed away on April 19, 202
5, at East Pavilion Nursing Center in Franklin, Virginia. He was born on May 7, 1933, to the late Floyd and Louise Elks. Along with his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Opal; his son, Gerry Elks; and his sisters, Dean Barber and Jean Simpson.
A native of Martin County, North Carolina, Gerald graduated from Bear Grass High School and attended East Carolina University. After a brief career in sales, he joined Union Camp’s Accounting Department, where he managed the Stores and Roll Finishing Inventory offices.
Gerald’s love for Christ inspired him to guide his family and many others to be and do their best. At Franklin Baptist Church, he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon and Church Clerk. As a Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster and Freemason, Gerald exemplified a life of integrity and service. He was especially proud of every young man he helped become an Eagle Scout and loved coaching aspiring masons in their degree work. While caring for his mother, who resided at East Pavilion Nursing Center, he established a worship service for the residents and served as a volunteer for several years. When not occupied with work or service efforts, Gerald loved returning to his farm boy roots by tending his vegetable garden and regaling all who would listen with tales from bygone days.
Gerald is survived by his son, David (Sandra) of Lumberton, North Carolina; three granddaughters, Jennifer Hamilton (Brandon), Kayla Smith (Corey) and Megan Elks and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 28 at Franklin Baptist Church at 2 p.m. The family will receive guests following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Pavilion Residents Fund or the mission fund at Franklin Baptist Church.
