Indians, Lady Broncos lead highlights at meet

The Southampton High School varsity boys outdoor track and field team placed first and the Franklin High School varsity girls team placed second at an eight-school meet hosted by FHS on Thursday, March 27.
SOUTHAMPTON BOYS
MileStat.com reported that Southampton senior Steven McClenny distinguished himself at the meet, finishing first in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 22.58 seconds. His teammate, junior Zayden Pope, took second with a time of 23.49 seconds.
Southampton’s boys 4-by-100-meter relay team also placed first with a time of 43.84 seconds. MileStat reported that the team featured junior Miguel Bradshaw, Pope, sophomore Desmond Joyner and McClenny.
In the boys 4-by-400-meter relay, Southampton finished second with a time of 4:16.37. MileStat reported that the Indians’ team included senior Xzaveon Worrell, junior Tyler Branch, freshman Rah’Kel Hill and sophomore Greg Dawson.
Southampton sophomore Will Holland placed second in the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:13.82.
FRANKLIN GIRLS
Sophomore Ayarni Benn led the highlights for the Lady Broncos on March 27, finishing in first place in the girls 100- and 200-meter dashes and lowering her regional qualifying times.
Benn qualified for the Region 1B Track and Field Championships while competing at the March 19 track meet at Sussex Central High School.
Sophomore Carley Jackson finished fourth in the girls 200- and 400-meter dashes on March 27. Her 400-meter time qualified her to compete at regionals. She also finished second in the girls long jump, her first time trying that event.
Sophomore Jahnia Jordan finished in third place in the long jump; sophomore Denali Mitchell finished in fourth place.
The Lady Broncos’ 4-by-100-meter relay team of Denali Mitchell, junior Zariah Mitchell, Jordan and Benn finished in second place and lowered their regional qualifying time.
The Lady Broncos’ 4-by-100-meter relay team of freshmen Jazmyne Spates, Samajiea Jones, Jaidah Hunt and Kamora Moody ran a time that qualified them to compete at regionals.
The Lady Broncos’ 4-by-400-meter relay team of juniors Gabriela Quiroz, Aleja Hayes, Telease Willis and Aaliyah Gatling finished in second place.
SOUTHAMPTON GIRLS
Southampton’s varsity girls outdoor track and field team placed third at the March 27 meet and featured multiple first-place finishers.
Senior Rebekah Bury placed first in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:56.23, and she was the lone finisher in the girls 3,200-meter run, recording a time of 15:33.92.
The Lady Indians’ 4-by-400-meter relay team was victorious with a time of 5:13.60. MileStat noted that the team included junior Makiela Fullington, junior Skylar Hamlin, junior Dasha Owens and senior Trinity Evans.
Earning second in the girls 200-meter dash was sophomore Zykira McClenny with a time of 28.49 seconds.
WINDSOR BOYS AND GIRLS
The Windsor High School varsity boys and girls outdoor track and field teams placed fifth and seventh, respectively, at the March 27 meet.
Junior Jeremiah Newby shined in field events, winning the boys discus throw with a 104-foot-1-inch throw and also winning the boys shot put with a 34-04 throw.
Senior Nicolas Stephens placed second in the discus throw with a 100-05 result.
Senior Caden Pierce won the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:09.45.
Among the highlights for the Lady Dukes, junior Mila Jacobsen finished second in the girls 800-meter run with a time of 3:04.71, and sophomore Nira Butler placed second in the girls discus throw with a 73-11 throw.
FRANKLIN BOYS
Franklin’s varsity boys outdoor track and field team placed eighth at the March 27 meet.
Top finishers for the Broncos included sophomore Zion Brown, who tied for sixth in the boys discus throw with an 80-11 throw, and the 4-by-100-meter relay team, which placed sixth with a time of 47.08 seconds. MileStat noted that the team included sophomore Lamaj Boone, sophomore Ahmod Edwards, sophomore Xavier Mclendon and senior Sean Solomon.
