The Franklin Southampton Concert Association, with funding from the Camp Foundation, announced that it is pleased to present the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in concert on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Southampton High School Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
A Franklin Southampton Concert Association (FSCA) news release noted that the VSO, the region’s most celebrated musical, educational and entrepreneurial arts organization, will continue its narrative in innovation and excellence with a program of music encouraging people to “Look up!” Conducted by Alexander Chen, the orchestra will present a program representing the stars and sky — from Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter” to John Williams scores to “Over the Rainbow.” The program is sure to leave the audience star struck.
The Virginia Symphony Orchestra continues to challenge expectations and push the boundaries of what an American orchestra can be, as demonstrated in this year’s program. Innovation and excellence are at the heart of the VSO’s narrative. The VSO has received national attention for its unique mission serving a home area of 1.7 million across the diverse communities of southeastern Virginia.
The VSO will be led by guest conductor Alexander Chen, a Taiwanese-American conductor and cellist based in Virginia. He has a passion for bringing together traditional and non-traditional audiences through symphonic repertoire. He enjoys combining unique perspectives on familiar programming with underrepresented hidden gems to create refreshing musical stories.
Chen made his guest conductor debut with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in March 2024 and regularly serves as a cover conductor with the Symphony. Early 2025 saw Chen assist at the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. He returns to the Virginia Symphony to conduct programs in the spring and summer of 2025.
In addition to this free concert by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the FSCA season has one remaining event — Good Shot Judy presents a Century of Swing, Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. For more information on this concert, visit the website https://franklinsouthamptonconcerts.org/.
